J-MILLA’s five favourite places in Darwin

“Everyone’s so cruisy up in Darwin,” said J-MILLA, speaking to Rolling Stone Australia a couple of years ago. The rapper and proud Mak Mak Marranunggu man grew up on Larrakia Land and he remains a de facto advocate for the Top End’s biggest city.

“We’re laidback people,” J-MILLA told Rolling Stone. “That’s where I was born and raised and I think that’s made an impact on me as a person.”

J-MILLA will co-headline the first Darwin edition of Live Nation’s Ones to Watch showcase series this August. His brother and fellow MC Yung Milla is also on the lineup, and so is Māori soul singer and longtime NT resident Juran.

J-MILLA’s latest single, “Boomerang,” came out in July. The track opens with the Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir singing a section of “Mayatja altimani mununi minala” in language. It’s the latest example of J-MILLA’s habit of merging traditional Indigenous music with contemporary hip hop flow and production.

Ones to Watch comes to Darwin’s Bustard Town on Thursday 8 August. Ahead of the event, J-MILLA tells us about his five favourite places in Darwin.

Palmerston

“Palmerston is where all my family live,” says J-MILLA, referring to the NT’s second largest city, 20 kilometres from central Darwin. “I love connecting with family when being in Darwin.”

Leanyer Water Park

“This is a spot I visited every weekend as a child,” J-MILLA says of the Leanyer Water Park. These days, J-MILLA takes his own kids to the family-oriented recreation centre “every time we are in Darwin.”

Trailer Boat Club

Just north of Bundilla Beach is the Darwin Trailer Boat Club, “one of the best restaurants along the esplanade,” says J-MILLA. “There’s a beautiful sunset and ocean view. Love the chicken parmi.”

Mindil Beach Sunset Market

The Mindil Beach Sunset Market is open from Thursday to Sunday, offering “the best variety of food for a late lunch or early dinner,” says J-MILLA. “It’s right on the beach with the sea breeze.”

“I love spending time with family at the Mindil Beach markets,” J-MILLA says.

Lola’s Pergola

Down at Cullen Bay, you’ll find Lola’s Pergola, J-MILLA’s “favourite food and hangout venue” in Darwin. It’s “extremely cosy,” he says, “with big fans to keep the locals cool.”
