Herbie Hancock will play his first Australian shows since 2019 this October. The jazz legend has planned a seven-date tour of the country, including two shows at the Sydney Opera House and visits to Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Details below.

Hancock, who recently turned 84 years old, has been releasing music since the early 1960s. From 1964-68, he was a member of the Miles Davis Quintet alongside Davis, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, bass player Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams. He composed a number of Davis’ songs during this period, including “Madness” and “Riot” from 1968’s Nefertiti.

Hancock’s solo discography takes in a range of jazz styles, from post-bop and modal jazz to jazz fusion and and electro funk. His best known works are the hard bop composition “Cantaloupe Island” from 1964’s Empyrean Isles and the funky, synth-heavy “Watermelon Man” and “Chameleon” from 1973’s Head Hunters.

In recent years, Hancock has collaborated with everyone from Flying Lotus to P!nk, Esperanza Spalding and Domi and JD Beck.
