NoKTuRNL pre-empted the climate action catchphrase, “there is no planet B,” on their bracing debut single, “Same Old Song.” The line, “How many worlds do we have to live on? Just one,” is even more salient today than when the song came out a quarter of a century ago.
Frontperson and Arrernte man Craig Tilmouth raps the lyrics of “Same Old Song” over fuzzed-out metal guitar chords and a booming hip hop drum beat. The chorus may be goofy – “We don’t shit pop / We’re here to rip rock” – but Tilmouth’s verses hit home, speaking of environmental destruction and nationalist isolationism.
“We always wondered, were we too confronting?” Tilmouth told Double J in 2023. “Could people not handle what we were saying?”
“Same Old Song” appeared on NoKTuRNL’s debut EP, Unveiled, in 2000. The Alice Springs band released their one and only album, Time Flies, in 2003.
