Classic video of the week: Madison Avenue – “Everything You Need/Who The Hell Are You” (Live at the 2000 ARIAs)

Madison Avenue cleaned up at the 2000 ARIA Awards. Vocalist Cheyne Coates and producer Andy Van Dorsselaer took home four pointy trophies for their breakout single, “Don’t Call Me Baby,” including Single of the Year.

But instead of performing the ARIA triple-platinum hit at the ceremony, the Melbourne duo ran through a medley of two other songs from their debut album, The Polyester Embassy, released a couple of weeks before the ARIAs.

Neither “Everything You Need” nor “Who the Hell Are You” stacks up against the deliriously hooky “Don’t Call Me Baby,” but Madison Avenue still pulled off one of the all-time ARIA performances.

The reason? At the end of “Everything You Need,” Coates motioned for someone to bring her a drink. Was it water? Soda? A Lemon Ruski? We can’t be sure, but the glass of mystery liquid took centre stage for the rest of the performance. Coates and an ensemble of dancers were in the middle of a choreographed routine, leaving the singer with scant opportunity to take a sip.

It remains riveting viewing 24 years later.

Madison Avenue would release just one more single, 2001’s “Reminiscing,” before Coates and Van Dorsselaer went their separate ways in 2003.
