Classic video of the week: Turnstyle – “Spray Water on the Stereo” (Live on The 10:30 Slot)

Years before a homophonous band from Baltimore turned indie kids onto hardcore, Perth band Turnstyle positioned themselves as Australia’s answer to Pavement and Grandaddy.

In their late 90s/early 00s heyday, Turnstyle churned out catchy slacker rock songs bolstered by the kitschy, amateur-ish sounds of the Casiotone keyboard.

Turnstyle’s close affiliation with the Casiotone sound prompted the Western Australian Museum to include some of bandleader Adem Kerimofski’s keyboards in its Innovation and Creativity exhibition, which spotlighted the creative and innovative people of Western Australia.

But Casiotones aside, Kerimofski and co. knew how to write a power pop anthem. Case in point is their 1999 single “Spray Water on the Stereo,” which appeared in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 1999.

“Spray Water on the Stereo” featured on Turnstyle’s debut album, Turnstyle Country, along with the follow-up single “Portamento.” In 2000, Turnstyle performed both tracks on ABC TV’s The 10:30 Slot, hosted by former Recovery presenter Dylan Lewis.
