The four albums that have influenced Ben Lee the most
Ben Lee grew up in Sydney in the 1980s. He started his recording career in 1993 as the 14-year-old lead singer of Noise Addict. The band’s second gig was supporting Sonic Youth at Sydney’s Selina’s Nightclub.
Lee’s solo career began in 1995 with the album Grandpaw Would, released Stateside on the Beastie Boys’ Grand Royal imprint. Locally, his breakthrough came with his third album, 1998’s Breathing Tornados. The album’s lead single, “Cigarettes Will Kill You,” reached #2 in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 1998.
Lee hit his commercial peak with his fifth album, 2005’s Awake Is the New Sleep, which featured two of his most popular singles: “Gamble Everything for Love” and the APRA Award-winning “Catch My Disease.”
While he’s never returned to such lofty heights, Lee remains as busy as ever. His next album, This One’s For The Old Headz, will come out on Friday 20 September. He’s currently on a mammoth Australian tour, which continues until late October. Find all the details here.
