The Go-Betweens performed – or mimed – “Streets of Your Town,” the lead single from their sixth album, 16 Lovers Lane, on Hey Hey It’s Saturday in 1988. The song was written by and features the lead vocals of the late Grant McLennan.
While it’s now a canonical Australian indie-pop song, “Streets of Your Town” wasn’t exactly a hit, peaking at #68 on the ARIA charts. In 2018, “Streets of Your Town” topped Guardian Australia’s Songs of Brisbane poll. The band’s violinist, Amanda Brown, told the paper that McLennan wrote “Streets of Your Town” in 10 minutes, with Brown adding the call and response vocals in the verse.
As for Hey Hey It’s Saturday, the show, hosted by Daryl Somers and Ossie Ostrich, aired on Channel Nine between 1971 and 1999 and was revived in 2009-10 and 2021-22.
