-TOPIA is a one-day music and arts festival happening at Abbotsford Convent on the public holiday Friday 26 September. The lineup features dozens of local and international DJs, bands, solo artists, dancers and art installations. It’s supposed to be fun, but also unusual, and maybe even a bit perplexing. The event name is a nod to its founders’ aim to explore the “tension between utopia and dystopia.”
An even split of live acts and DJs will be playing across four stages at the Convent, both indoors and outside. Acid house veteran and Do!!You!! Radio presenter Richard Sen will play four two hours in the Industrial School, which has been renamed Sensoria for the occasion. There’ll be live sets in Sensoria from harpist Genevieve Fry and dub and trip hop producer Takeo.K, and a DJ set from Harold of Steeplejack Records.
The Magdalen Laundry has been renamed Psycho Slow Burn, and it’ll feature after-dusk DJ sets from Andy Garvey b2b DJ Scorpion and DJ PGZ, plus a mid-arvo set of live synthpop from Simona Castricum and two hours of Latin club mayhem from Chuleo Club, who’ll be joined by ballroom house House of Furia.
The Mercator Lawn has been renamed The Garden of Earthly Delights, and it’s hosting Brazilian DJ Omoloko, a b2b from crowd favourites Myles Mac and DJ Possum, and a closing live set from Naarm’s best dubbed-out post-punk band EXEK.
Sirens is the name given to The Oratory stage, and it’ll host live sets from bedroom glam artist Spike Fuck and slow burn R&B performer KHYA, plus DJ sets from Colette and Zobs Palace. Find the complete playing times below and get your tickets here.
