“Take your medication” is the chanted, repeated hook in “the one,” the new single from post-punk outfit The Empty Threats.
The no wave-inspired song is the Adelaide/Tarntanya band’s second single of 2025, following the noisier but no less infectious “Phone Call.” Much like that previous release, “the one” is built on a propulsive drum beat, with vocalist Stu Patterson using the forward-motion to delve into some private subject matter.
“It’s a pretty personal song about a traumatic event that led to me getting diagnosed with ASD, which ultimately was a very positive outcome,” they told Check Check. “I think it’s a song reflecting hurt with ex-partners being around in a close-knit scene.”
Beyond the aforementioned chant, the lyrics touch on shame, volatile self-perception, love and self-preservation. Meanwhile, the arrangement grows more unhinged as the track goes on. Or, in the band’s own words, it “builds to an infectious and unforgettable chorus of no wave sensibilities with crushing guitars and ear worm hook vocals that bring you back again and again.”
