Mengers, from CDMX, are Mexico's "most outrageous art-punk trio"
Mexico recently overtook Australia to become the world’s tenth-largest music market.
Peso Pluma, Fuerza Regida and Grupo Frontera are some of the most prominent contemporary Mexican musicians, and these artists’ narcocorridos and norteños have topped the US charts in recent years. Peso Pluma has collaborated with Cardi B and Anitta, while Grupo Frontera – who are based in Texas – have worked with Bad Bunny.
But these acts represent only a small section of the contemporary Mexican music landscape, which encompasses the political krautrock of Mengers, the trova and shoegaze of Lusia Almaguer, the surrealistic folk rock of Belafonte Sensacional and the Latina soul and R&B of Paloma Morphy.
Mexico is a huge country with many distinct regions and subcultures, and its music scene reflects this cultural diversity. It’s for this reason that Mexican music industry professionals Malfi Dorantes, of MalfiCo, and Cynthia Flores, of Ascendente Agencia, were invited to speak at BIGSOUND 2025. Ahead of their visit, Dorantes and Flores gave us the lowdown on their favourite new Mexican acts.
