sina, the solo project of Melbourne/Naarm-based musician and Dregs member Claudia Sinacori, kickstarted a fruitful month for Australian music when she uploaded her gothic ambient production “hold me down” to Bandcamp on 1 April.
Plenty more goodness followed in the next four-and-a-bit weeks, including the Big Sky, Liquid Sun EP from Frankston techno duo Sleep D, the industrial power ballad “Hear Them” from Chapter Music’s last-ever signing Npcede, DJ PGZ’s filthy 2-step remix of Gut Health’s “Stiletto,” and an album of haunting drones from Penelope Trappes.
Purient, the solo project of Acopia’s Kate Durman, traded lines with cherry chola, the Sydney-via-CDMX neoperreo star, on 1tbsp’s digital house track “Rush (Missing Out On Me),” and London vocalist Yiigaa joined Anna Lunoe on a reboot of the latter’s big room club track “Pearl (Find My Way).”
At the other end of the spectrum, Divide And Dissolve’s Takiaya Reed flaunted her neoclassical composition chops on “Death Cult,” the closing track on D&D’s otherwise very-doomy album Insatiable, and Andras and Eleventeen Eston channelled the spirit of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra on “Bubbles,” the second single from the new Wilson Tanner album, Legends.
We also had some slyly political dancehall from Olana, fresh bars from the always nasty Vv Pete, shoegazing alt-pop from Body Type guitarist Annabel Blackman’s Solo Career alias, avant-rap disorientation from Teether & Kuya Neil, and lo-fi spiritualism from Luritja singer-songwriter Keanu Nelson.
