Dr Sure’s Unusual Practice are sick to death of fucking pigs.

The band’s new single, “No Pigs”, is two-and-a-half minutes of fiery punk rock. It’s one half of a new Dr Sure’s 7″ out in December. There’s a new LP on the way too, produced by The Drones’ Dan Luscombe (Amyl & the Sniffers, Courtney Barnett).

Put simply, “No Pigs” is about a farm with a pig problem. “‘No Pigs’ is an Animal Farm reference,” says band leader Dougal Shaw. In this instance, the rest of the animals can no longer tolerate the pigs’ filth.

“No good copper in a crooked system,” Shaw sings in the first verse. “Got 10 year old kids locked up in your prison.”

“It’s nothing new for art to hold a mirror to society,” Shaw says of the song’s sociopolitical resonance. “Sing ’10 year old kids locked up and your prison’ and you pretty quickly recognise the absurdity. Music can have a role in making that shit plain as day, bringing people together.”

“No Pigs” ends with the Italian protest chant, “siamo tutti antifascisti”, which translates to “we are all anti-fascists”. The chant erupted spontaneously during Dr Sure’s performance at France’s Binic Folks Blues Festival this July. Footage of the moment went viral, and when it came time to record the song, drummer Miranda Holt suggested they include the chant.

“Beyond Murdoch rags and bot farms, in reality we are all anti-fascist,” Shaw says.

“No Pigs” will be paired with another new song, “Desksitter”, on Dr Sure’s new 7″, due out a few days after the band’s performance at Meredith Music Festival. All proceeds from the 7″ will go to Palestinian Mutual Aid and the Black People’s Union.

“I’m yelling about colonialism. It could be a bit of a futile, shouting-at-clouds type situation, but I figure if we can redirect profits into mutual aid for families who are suffering the effects of [colonialism] here and in Palestine, then maybe it ain’t so futile after all,” Shaw says.
