APRA has introduced a new category for its 2024 APRA Music Awards: Most Performed Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Work. It’s the latest addition to the awards’ genre suite, which already recognises artists in pop, rock, alternative, blues & roots, country, dance/electronic, hip hop/rap and R&B/soul.
Some scene heavyweights are up for the inaugural award. Parkway Drive are nominated for “Darker Still,” The Amity Affliction for “It’s Hell Down Here,” and Polaris for “Inhumane,” co-written by the late Ryan Siew.
The genre-shifting King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard are also up for the award for their thrash number “Dragon.” Alpha Wolf’s collaboration with Welsh outfit Holding Absence, “60cm of Steel,” rounds out the list.
The nominees and winners of APRA’s genre awards are decided based on statistical analysis. APRA looks at the royalties earned across broadcast, digital downloads, streaming services, and live performances.
APRA Music Awards 2024 are happening on Wednesday 1 May at ICC Sydney on Gadigal land.
