Amyl and The Sniffers are back with the single “U Should Not Be Doing That.” It’s the Melbourne band’s first new music since their ARIA-winning second album, Comfort To Me, came out in September 2021. “U Should Not Be Doing That” and its B-side, “Facts,” are streaming now and will be available on a limited edition 7″ vinyl. Like much of Amyl and The Sniffers’ back catalogue, “U Should Not Be Doing That” straddles the line between angsty and comedic. In a statement, frontperson Amy Taylor described it as a riposte to unwelcome commentators.
“Yes I’m talking to you random 40 year old metalheads sitting around a table doing lines and bitching about a 28 year old chick in a band for wearing shorts and ‘selling out,'” Taylor said. Though, she suggested the song’s lyrics shouldn’t be taken too seriously.
“It’s unconscious and meant nothing at the time of writing it but now I think it’s a comedic way of rubbing the dog’s nose in its own dog piss after it weed on your favourite rug or something.”
Taylor was recently announced as the keynote speaker for this year’s BIGSOUND conference. The event runs from Tuesday 3 to Friday 6 September in various venues around Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley. Taylor’s appointment as keynote speaker follows former Camp Cope frontperson Georgia Maq’s keynote at BIGSOUND 2023.
Amyl and The Sniffers will kick off a UK and European festival tour later this week. They’ll head to North America in July for a bunch of headline shows and support slots with Foo Fighters and Sleater-Kinney. Keep up with the band here.
